Social sessions resume with Sunday morning session.

A social session is going to be held for the next few Sunday mornings from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 a.m.   The current guidlines for social distancing still apply so we are no means back to normal.  It is suggested you bring a chair to sit on for when you are not playing.  There will be no sitting or standing on the courts side if you are not playing.  The club will provide the tennis balls.

Works league team brave the rain but still lose to Moorgate A

The club’s Works League team beat the elements by managing to play Moorgate A at Ridgeway on Wednesday evening.  However, heavy skies and intermittent rain meant the floodlights were on very early but it didn’t stop the visitors taking the points with a 3-1 victory.

First couple Glyn Rudge and Steve Bramhall took the sole rubber with a 9-2 win against the seconds but lost their first rubber by 5-9.  Tim Robinson and Ben Kay lost their two rubbers by 0-9 to the second couple but fared better against the firsts by losing 5-9.

Final match score was Rubbers 1-3, Games 19- 29

There is no match this Saturday, the 5th, for the men’s Saturday team and they resume fixtures on the 12th September with a home match against Hallamshire D.  The Works League team have an away return match v Moorgate A next Wednesday, the 9th September.

Saturday Men’s team in drawn match against Doncaster

After two hours of tennis in cold, wet conditions the men’s match on Saturday against Doncaster D ended in a draw with rubbers shared at 2-2, sets at 4-4 and games at 31-31.

Glyn Rudge and Dave Bramhall beat the firsts on a tie-break after sets of 1-6, 6-2.  One of the Doncaster players, injured in that rubber then conceded the second rubber to Tim Robinson and John Hallgarth who had lost their first rubber to the seconds.  Glyn and Dave also lost their second rubber and, after adding everything up, the match was drawn.

The next match at the club is Wednesday the 2nd Sept when the Works League team take on Moorgate A in the match re-arranged from the 29th August.

 

Welbeck defeat for Works League team

Ridgeway suffered a 0-4 defeat at home to Welbeck on Wednesday evening.  On a lovely evening, after last night’s shocker, first pair John Hallgarth and Tim Robinson found the first Welbeck pair too hot to handle and lost by 1-9, and then fared little better against the seconds and lost by 2-9.  Second pair Danny Lidster and Cliff Andrews lost by 2-9 to the second pair and then by 3-9 to the firsts.  Final match score was Rubbers: 0-4,  Games; 8-36

The next match at Ridgeway is set for Saturday the 29th August when Ridgeway host Doncaster D in the S & D LTA Mens League, Division 4.

Fixture changes

There will be no Works League match at Ridgeway on Wednesday 19th August.  The match is to be re-arranged at a later date.

Similarly on the 2nd September there will be no Works League Cup match as Ridgeway were knocked out by Moorgate B last week.

On both of the above dates the courts will now be available in the evening for social play.

 

Ridgeway beat Graves C in Men’s League

Ridgeway triumphed 3-1 over Graves C team in the opening match of the S & D Men’s League.  The match was really an away match but because Graves Leisure Centre is still closed and the tennis courts unavailable, Graves asked if the match could be switched to Ridgeway.

First couple Glyn and Liam Rudge made short work of the opposition in both of their rubbers with a 6-1, 6-0 win against the first Graves pair and then repeated the scoreline against the seconds.  Second couple of John Hallgarth and Tim Robinson beat the second couple on a tie-break after sharing sets of 6-2, 6-7.  In their second rubber against the first Graves pair they just lost on a tie-break after sharing sets of 6-1, 1-6.

Final match score was a win to Ridgeway.  Rubbers: 3-1, Sets: 6-2, Games: 44-19.

Works League team make cup exit

Not only was the weather hot on Wednesday evening but so were Moorgate B as they defeated Ridgeway’s Works League team in the cup quarter final match at the Rotherham club’s courts.  They put out a strong side to defeat Ridgeway by 4-0.

Glyn Rudge partnered John Hallgarth and they lost 4-6, 1-6 to the first Moorgate couple and by 3-6, 1-6 to the seconds. Ben Kay and Cliff Andrews lost to the second couple by 1-6, 2-6 and by 0-6, 1-6 to the firsts.

Final match score was: Rubbers 0-4, Sets 0-8, Games 13-48.

Fixture venue change – 15th August

Ridgeway Men’s Team will be at home this Saturday, the 15th August, and are playing Graves C.   The match will start at 2.00 pm so the courts will not be available for social play from 1:45 pm.  Graves replace Bradfield who have now withdrawn the team that they originally entered.

Works League team find it tough at Welbeck

The Works League team found it tough going on Wednesday the 5th August when they suffered a defeat by 4-0 to Welbeck at the Nottinghamshire club’s courts.  Steve Bramhall  and John Hallgarth lost by 9-2 to each of the Welbeck couples whilst Ben Kay and Tim Robinson lost by 9-0 to the second couple but fared better against the firsts but lost by 9-3.   It is cup week next week with an away match at Moorgate.
